Door County Day Trip from Green Bay

If you've got a non-game day, point the car north. Door County — the peninsula that juts into Lake Michigan — is about 75 minutes from our Finger Road homes and feels like a different world: cherry orchards, lighthouses, state parks, and harbor towns. Here's a day that works.

Morning: drive up and start in Fish Creek

Leave by 9am and you'll be in Fish Creek by mid-morning. It's the charming heart of the county — walkable, full of galleries and shops, with a pretty harbor. Grab a coffee and a cherry pastry (cherries are the local crop) and wander.

Late morning: Peninsula State Park

Right next to Fish Creek is Peninsula State Park, nearly 4,000 acres of trails, beaches, and bluff-top views of the bay. Even an hour here is worth it. Drive up to the Eagle Tower observation deck for the big view, or walk a short section of the Eagle Trail if you want to stretch your legs.

Lunch: a fish boil (if you can)

The Door County fish boil is a tradition worth experiencing — whitefish, potatoes, and onions cooked over an open fire with a dramatic "boil over" finale. Several restaurants do them, often in the evening, so check times. If lunch timing doesn't line up, any waterfront spot with a patio will do.

Afternoon: Ephraim and ice cream

Continue up the shore to Ephraim, a postcard village of white clapboard buildings. Wilson's Restaurant & Ice Cream has been scooping since 1906 and is, in our humble opinion, the best ice cream in Wisconsin. Get a cone and walk it off along the water.

A few logistics

• Summer weekends get busy. If you can go on a weekday, do — the difference is night and day.
• It's spread out. The peninsula is long; pick two or three towns rather than trying to see everything.
• Gas up before you leave Green Bay. Stations thin out as you go north.
• Sunset is the move. If you're not rushing back, the west-facing shore (Fish Creek, Ephraim) has gorgeous sunsets over the water.

Home base matters
